Egypt handed shock AFCON exit as Lorch late winner sinks Pharaohs despite massive home support

Thembikosi Lorch’s 85th goal was all Bafana Bafana of South Africa needed to hand the much-fancied Egyptians exit out of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) in the presence of over 70,000 fans at Cairo International Stadium..

South Africa were the first to test Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy through Thembinkosi Lorch after just two minutes but the Pharaohs goalkeeper was up to the challenge.

Egypt responded with Mohamed Salah making use of Ahmed Elmohamady cross but the Liverpool striker shot was deflected to a corner.

Bafana Bafana had the upper hand and threatened Elshenawy more than once in the opening half. At the quarter hour mark Elshenawy was up to Percy Tau shot. He was there again to stop another shot from Tau after 22 minutes with the South Africans looking nearer to take the lead.

In the second half of the game, Lorch once again could have given South Africa the lead after 72 minutes but Elshenawy once again was there to save the hosts.

And five minutes to the end Egypt had to deal with the shock. Lebo Mosiba caught Egypt defense napping and found Lorch who went one on one with Elshenawy to score what proved to be the shocking winner for Bafana Bafana.

Ighalo nets brace as Super Eagles dump defending champions Cameroon out of AFCON, qualify for quarter finals

Super Eagles have qualified for the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after overcoming the Cameroonian challenge.

The Nigerians raced to the lead through Odion Ighalo in the 19th minute of the game and surrendered their first-half lead to the Indomitable Lions who netted two quickfire goals.

The Man of the Match Ighalo’s shot from inside the box was deflected beyond Andre Onana after Omeruo laid in a cross into the area from the right.

Stephane Bahoken, son of Indomitable Lions legend Paul Bahoken, leveled for Cameroon in the 40th minute when he tapped in simply from a yard out after Nigerian keeper Daniel kpayi failed to pick out a Christian Bassogog cross from the left, while Clinton Njie shot the Cameroonians into the lead.

Njie latched on to a long ball from skipper Eric Choupo-Moting before beating Kenneth Omeruo for power and finishing with a strong low effort from inside the box.

Ighalo completed his brace in the 62nd minute beating the offside trap and sweeping the ball past Onana after Musa had done well to chest down Collins Awaziem’s cross from the right.

Arsenal forward handed the Super Eagles victory in the 66th minute.
