Casemiro saves Zidane blushes as Europe minnows Club Brugge stun Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu (Match Report)

Casemiro came to Real Madrid’s rescue after Club Brugge scored twice to race clear of the Los Blancos in the first half, but the Spanish giants fought back to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Zinedine Zidane’s side went in 2-0 down at halt time, as defensive errors allowed Dennis Bonaventure two score twice before the break, with goals from Sergio Ramos and Casemiro securing a nervous point after the break.

Los Blancos lost 3-0 in their first Champions League game of the season, away at PSG, and they were behind after nine minutes as Percy Tau broke in behind a high offside line and squared for Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis to tap home past Thibaut Courtois.

The hosts did not learn their lesson, as Bonaventure broke in behind himself five minutes before the break, and despite falling over at the key moment, he managed to poke home past Courtois.

The hosts were in determined mood after the break, with Luka Modric and Casemiro both bringing saves from former Liverpool goal keeper Simon Mignolet.

Ramos eventually got Zidane’s side back in the game on 55 minutes, nodding home Karim Benzema’s cross, and despite VAR proving inconclusive on an offside call against the Spanish international – the goal stood.

With time running out, Philippe Clement’s side were unable to hold out, as Brazilian midfielder Casemiro powered home a header from Toni Kroos’ whipped free kick.

Kante joins Chelsea training ahead of Lille trip (Watch footage as Blues board plane to France)

N’Golo Kante joined other Chelsea stars to train at Cobham today as the Blues put the finishing touches to preparations for the club’s Champions League trip to France.

The Frenchman participated fully in today’s session, the first 15 minutes of which were open to the media, after missing the weekend win over Brighton.

While most of the squad took a little while to emerge from the depths of the indoors, the goalkeepers slaved away for the start of their session.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Willy Caballero and Jamie Cumming looked no less enthused as they kept the ball up and dived to the floor in the torrential conditions.

Football.london report that among the first of the outfield players was Olivier Giroud. The striker did not make the squad against Brighton after suffering from illness but he appears to be back in training ahead of the clash with Lille.

Another member of the Blues squad hit by illness was Kurt Zouma and he also trained, while N’Golo Kante confirmed Frank Lampard’s comments after the win over the Seagulls, that he would be in contention to face the French opposition. The midfielder has had an ongoing problem with his hamstring that he has carried through from pre-season.

Lampard said at the weekend: “Yes, it’s an awareness. I didn’t want to take the risk. I spoke to N’Golo about it, he’s so important for us – we know that – but he’s had a difficult pre-season.

“It’s been difficult for us but mainly for him to get going because of the break up of his pre-season as his injury carried over from last year, so it wasn’t right to risk it today.

“He could have a chance for Lille.”

Of course, no Chelsea training session is free from the presence of youth following Lampard’s arrival and as well as the usual faces of Mason Mount, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi were Billy Gilmour, Marc Guehi and Clinton Mola.

Antonio Rudiger, Emerson Palmieri and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were all once again missing as they continue their recoveries.

Bayern Munich star reveals he almost joined Antonio Conte at Chelsea in 2017

Bayern Munich centre-back Niklas Sule has revealed he was tempted to join Chelsea when former Blues boss Antonio Conte angled to sign for his services.

The Germany star finally opted for Munich rather than London when he left Hoffenheim in January 2017.

The Blues were keen for Sule to replace John Terry at Stamford Bridge but he felt it was not the right time to go to England.

And as he prepares to face Spurs in the Champions League, the 24-year-old said in his interview with DAZN: “I certainly put a lot of thought into joining the Premier League when I had the chance to [do so].

“That’s definitely one of the leagues which I really want to play in. At the time, however, I saw the move to Munich as the best step.

“And as you can see, I am very happy at Bayern. Not only because I’ve found my way here, but also because the club, the fans, and the staff are all great.”

Tammy Abraham makes decision to join Nigeria or England this week as Three Lions officials call for his medical record at Chelsea

Reports have emerged that Tammy Abraham is set to accept an England call if he is selected in Gareth Southgate’s next squad – dashing Nigeria’s hopes of securing the striker’s international future.

Nigeria have tried to convince Abraham, who has two friendly caps for England, to switch his international allegiance.

According to Sportsmail, the Football Association have requested Abraham’s medical records for Chelsea – a clear indication that he is under serious consideration for October’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Southgate announces his squad on Thursday, with Abraham hopeful his excellent start to the season will be enough for him to land a recall.

As of yet, the striker, who is 22 on Wednesday, is yet to publicly clarify which country he wants to play for.

But it is understood Abraham, who qualifies for Nigeria through his father, will answer England’s call if he is picked by Southgate this week.

Abraham would not be able to switch to Nigeria if he features for England in the forthcoming games against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria because they are competitive fixtures.

The Blues striker has netted seven goals in the Premier League this season, which makes him the highest scoring Englishman in the top flight.

Southgate revealed following England’s recent win over Kosovo that Abraham was firmly on his radar.

There are doubts over the form of Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli should Southgate decide to make space for an extra striker by dropping a midfielder.

Nigeria are also interested in poaching Abraham’s club team-mate Fikayo Tomori, who has represented England and Canada at youth level.

Eden Hazard reacts to criticisms, reveals why he’s not in good shape at Real Madrid

Eden Hazard has revealed the reason for his poor displays in Real Madrid jersey, cklaimimg he is not disturbed by early criticism of his start at Santiago Bernabeu.

The Belgian international arrived from Chelsea this summer in a €100m deal but, after suffering early injury problems, has yet to find the net for his new club.

Hazard has been starting for Los Blancos in an attacking front three which has also included the in-form Karim Benzema along with Gareth Bale.

“The criticisms don’t bother me. It’s me who has to prove my level on the pitch. They know my level and I have to improve so they are proud of me,” Hazard told his press conference on Monday, as cited by El Mundo Deportivo.

“I feel good. It’s true that they expect a lot from me and me too. I can do better. The criticisms are normal. Not everything is perfect but we are already top of the league.

“I had a setback with the injury, but I feel 100% because I am recovered. I need to be decisive, score goals. When I start scoring everything will be easier.

“It is not a matter of trust. The boss tells me to try more and it is I who have to give everything. I already feel good and I have to take a step forward to continue making differences.”
