Cristiano Ronaldo nets hat-trick, gives assist as Juventus put Cagliari to the sword (Match Report)

Cristiano Ronaldo ably marshalled Juventus’ demolition of Cagliari, scoring a hat-trick despite the visitors’ early resistance.

The Sardinians had not beaten Juve in the league since November 2009, followed by three draws from 17 encounters.

It took a very long time for this game to get going, as Ramsey and Dybala failed to keep their shots on target, while Cristiano Ronaldo was offside when his header forced a great save from Olsen.

Defender Merih Demiral was picked for the fifth game in a row rather than Matthijs de Ligt and showed why, as his header from a Miralem Pjanic corner clipped the crossbar.

Radja Nainggolan had the only real Cagliari chance to make an impact in the first half when sent clear by Giovanni Simeone on the counter, but he slipped at the crucial moment.

Juve did finally break through after the restart thanks to some shocking defending from the Sardinians. They were passing it slowly and sluggishly on the edge of their own penalty area, so Ronaldo pounced and went around Olsen to turn into an empty net. For the first time in his career, CR7 scored in five consecutive Serie A appearances.

It was nearly 2-0 moments later, as Olsen showed cat-like reflexes for a triple save on Paulo Dybala from close range, as the ball ricocheted around in the six-yard box.

Cagliari did threaten, as Wojciech Szczesny had to fingertip a Giovanni Simeone header on to the top of the bar from close range.

However, Marko Rog tripped Dybala in the penalty area and Ronaldo kept his cool to convert the spot-kick past Olsen, giving Juve more of a cushion.

Cagliari crumbled at the end, as Ronaldo decided to turn assist man with a pass down the left channel to send substitute Higuain forward, there was no real support, so Pipita cut back inside and blasted into the far bottom corner.

Less than a minute later, Douglas Costa made an impact with his sprint through the centre, slide-rule pass for Ronaldo’s angled drive, completing a hat-trick.

Douglas Costa ran almost from one end to the other, going down under pressure with no response to his penalty appeals.

Cagliari could’ve had a consolation goal late on, but Joao Pedro turned his marker to hit the top of the post.

Real Madrid join Chelsea on the hunt for Timo Werner

There are reports that Real Madrid are looking to boost their attacking force with the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

Werner has been on fine form in the Bundesliga in recent years and has already scored 18 times in the league this season.

Second behind Robert Lewandowski in the race for the Torjägerkanone (Top scorer), the German forward has been linked with some of Europe’s top clubs in the past 12 months, report The Sun.

According to El Desmarque, Zinedine Zidane is looking to add the 23-year-old in the summer to bolster their attack.

Madrid signed Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer but hasn’t made the impact they expected, scoring just once this season.

Werner has been linked with a move to Chelsea recently but it is unlikely Leipzig will part with their top scorer in January with the club sitting top of the Bundesliga.

Leipzig are two points ahead of Borussia Monchengladbach as they prepare for the second half of the season.

The German forward has been a consistent performer for Julian Nagelsmann’s side and the Bundesliga leaders will be reluctant to let their star man leave.

Frank Lampard reveals why he dropped Christian Pulisic from Nottingham Forest clash

Frank Lampard has revealed that Christian Pulisic picked up an injury in training before Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie.

Pulisic was not included in Chelsea’s matchday squad and instead watched on from the stands at Stamford Bridge as Lampard’s side booked their place in the fourth round of the competition.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ross Barkley scored at either end of the first half as the Blues cruised to a comfortable win.

Speaking after the match, Lampard confirmed to Chelsea TV that “Christian Pulisic got injured yesterday in training”.

The Metro reports that the United States international was seen walking around at Stamford Bridge with ease, though, so there are hopes the injury is not too severe.

Lampard was disappointed that Chelsea failed to add to their two goals in the second half and singled out Hudson-Odoi for praise after the win.

“These games are not easy. When they make changes it does not mean it’s an easier game,” the Chelsea manager told BBC Sport.

“We got our two goals and it was very comfortable but did we push on from that and create and score more goals? No, we didn’t and I would’ve liked to have scored some more.

“I was particularly pleased for Callum [Hudson-Odoi], he has had a bad injury, is getting himself fit and getting sharper. His goal was an early settler for us.

“There were performances around the pitch that were good and we need that.”
