Former Chelsea coach reveals move to bring Coutinho to Stamford Bridge when he was 14-year-old

Brendan Rodgers has revealed he tried to sign a 14-year-old Philippe Coutinho while he was coaching at Chelsea’s academy under Jose Mourinho.

The Leicester City boss explained how he already knew all about the Brazilian attacker when he became available in 2013 and why he jumped at the chance to take him to Liverpool.

“When I was looking at the team in the first six months, there was certain ingredients we were missing,” he told The Beautiful Game Podcast.

“Philippe was one I knew from my Chelsea days, because we tried to get him to Chelsea when he was 14 but he had already committed to Inter Milan.

“We talked about him during the summer and kept tabs on him then all of a sudden he became available and at 19 I thought: “Wow, right, let’s get this boy in.”

“And most people probably look at him and think he’s not for the Premier League but what a talent.”

The midfielder scored 41 league goals and made 37 assists during a successful career for the Reds before moving to Barcelona for a record £142million fee in January 2018.

But a disappointing spell with the LaLiga side saw loaned out to Bayern Munich and now he is being linked with a return to the Premier League.

Sportsmail report that Chelsea could yet have Coutinho in blue with Frank Lampard’s side one of the teams interested in him, but they would face competition from Arsenal and Tottenham.

Rodgers believes Coutinho will be able to prove to any doubters that he is capable of succeeding once again.

“He intimidates people when he has the ball with his quality,” said Rodgers.

“It’s sad to see, I hear people talk him down at the moment. This boy is top and if he comes to this league he’ll show that. He’s world class.”

Tammy Abraham reveals what he was doing to stay motivated during coronavirus pandemic lockdown

Tammy Abraham has been watching old videos of himself as part of his bid to stay motivated during the coronavirus lockdown.

Like players up and down the country, Chelsea striker Abraham has had a little more time than usual on his hands since football was suspended in mid-March.

But he has tried to put it to good use and explained that re-watching his best bits online and analysing his game was one of the methods he has used to stay occupied.

Abraham would have had plenty of goals to get through having scored 75 in 164 senior games for Bristol City, Swansea, Aston Villa and now Chelsea.

The 22 year-old said: “We just have to stay fit.

“I’ve been playing football around the house, running, doing a bit of gym just to try and stay motivated and even if that’s going on YouTube and typing up my old clips and watching my old videos just little things like that I’ve been doing just to stay motivated.”

Abraham, top scorer for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side, has 15 goals to his name this season and has also been staying on top of his fitness during the pause in a bid to finish the season strongly.

Though Abraham joked it has not always been easy to train without the odd disruption near his home, saying: “I’ve just been running around my area trying to stay fit,” report the Sportsmail.

“I’ve had a few hellos and all sorts and they’ve tried to stop me but I’ve just kept going!

“Apart from that I’ve got a Peleton bike here which I find really good and helpful so those are the ways I like to stay fit.”
