Arsenal overcome hard-fighting West Ham (Match Report)

Arsenal substitute Eddie Nketiah struck late to give Arsenal a 2-1 victory over a stubborn West Ham United.

Despite creating twice as many goal attempts as the Gunners, the Irons were left to rue an inability to turn dangerous positions and chances into goals and.

Arsenal had just three shots on target and scored from two of them – Alexandre Lacazette scoring with their first meaningful attempt and substitute Eddie Nketiah winning it with five minutes to play – while West Ham repeatedly tested Bernd Leno and his defenders, but had just Michail Antonio’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time to show for it.

The visitors could have been ahead inside five minutes, but Angelo Ogbonna stooped to nod straight at Leno from six yard out, when arguably a volley would have served the Italian better.

With Arsenal struggling to find any sort of rhythm, the Irons continued to work their way into dangerous positions.

After Declan Rice had seen a free-kick deflected wide and Antonio’s cross-shot had been saved by Leno low to the goalkeeper’s left, Bowen went down under a challenge from Arsenal’s summer signing Gabriel inside the penalty area, but neither Michael Oliver nor VAR official Chris Kavanagh deemed it a foul.

Having created nothing in the opening 25 minutes, Arsenal then scored with their first chance. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang beat the offside trap and crossed for the unmarked Lacazette, who headed into the roof of the net from eight yards.

West Ham levelled on the stroke of half-time after Ryan Fredericks’ low cross was tucked in by Michail Antonio.

The Hammers striker then headed against the crossbar as the dominant visitors pushed for a second goal.

But Nketiah tapped in with five minutes remaining following neat build-up play by Bukayo Saka and Dani Ceballos to secure a hard-fought win.

Manchester United stunned by Crystal Palace at Old Trafford (Match Report)

Wilfried Zaha scored twice as Crystal Palace beat Manchester United 3-1 for back-to-back victories at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were once again left frustrated by Crystal Palace who claimed a 3-1 victory, despite a debut goal for Donny van de Beek.

Andros Townsend’s close-range finish gave Palace the lead after seven minutes and David De Gea twice denied Jordan Ayew as the away side threatened on the counter.

Palace’s attacking dominance was not, however, to suggest they were enjoying an easy game – and Paul Pogba reminded his guests of the home side’s prowess with a well-hit shot from the edge of the box.

The thudded effort didn’t come close to beating Vicente Guaita – who flopped to his right and held the ball firmly – but it did ensure players and fans alike avoided complacency.

United established their grip on the game around the half-hour mark but were unable to capitalise on a tame period in charge.

Despite having a defence hit hard by injuries, the visitors looked typically controlled at the back – with Roy Hodgson’s masterful organisation in front of goal shining through.

A penalty for handball by Victor Lindelof, awarded after referee Martin Atkinson had reviewed the incident, was converted at the second attempt.

Ayew’s spot-kick was saved, but the VAR adjudged De Gea had come off his line too early and the retaken penalty was converted by Zaha on 74 minutes.

Substitute Donny van de Beek poked in six minutes later on his debut to reduce the deficit.

But Zaha’s low finish sealed the three points with five minutes remaining to continue Palace’s winning start to the season.

Half-Time Report: Arsenal 1-1 West Ham… Michail Antonio cancels out Alexandre Lacazette goal

Arsenal and West Ham are level after the host led through Alexandre Lacazette, while their opponents hit back on the brink of half time through Michail Antonio.

Not a whole lot else to that half. It had looked as if Arsenal might add to Lacazette’s goal but then they were opened up a devastating break by West Ham.

The Hammmers counter-attack well, with Jarrod Bowen driving through the middle and finding Ryan Fredericks on the outside. He whipped it into the six-yard area and Antonio was there to turn it in.

But before the the on the 25th minute, Arsenal’s first shot produced their goal in the first half. Willian played in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who crossed for Lacazette’s bullet header. A brief VAR check for offside but the goal was given.

Arsenal legend reacts to speculation Kai Havertz might be dropped to bench in Liverpool clash

Kai Havertz must improve against Liverpool after the £86million newcomer flopped on his Chelsea debut and appeared not to care.

That’s the verdict of Arsenal legend Paul Merson amid speculation Germany attacker Havertz might be dropped to the bench at home to the champions on Sunday afternoon.

Havertz was replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi in Chelsea’s Premier League opener, Monday’s 3-1 win at Brighton.

And Merson questioned not only the ex-Bayer Leverkusen hero’s display but also his attitude.

The former England striker wrote in his Daily Star column: “Kai Havertz has got a lot do. He didn’t play well.

“He didn’t even look interested at times. When he came off, he didn’t really seem to care. It was strange.”

Jurgen Klopp, Frank Lampard deny rift despite touchline spat at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp and Frank Lampard insist their touchline square-up is history.

The pair meet tomorrow for the first time since the Chelsea boss angered his Liverpool rival in July’s f-word spat at Anfield.

Lampard accused the Prem champs’ bench of “arrogance” and Klopp responded: “Frank has to learn. He has a lot of time — he is a young coach.”

But yesterday the Liverpool boss said: “There is no rivalry. I have no problem at all with Frank Lampard. We meet two or three times a season. I respect what he is doing.

“On the sideline we’re animated and emotional and sometimes say a few words which a few minutes later we wish we didn’t say.”

Chelsea boss Lampard echoed Klopp’s feelings ahead of tomorrow’s Stamford Bridge clash. He said: “I have huge respect for what Jurgen has done at Liverpool.

“The competitive nature of the 90 minutes can boil over in certain situations but my respect for him will never change.”

Half-Time Report: Crystal Palace lead Manchester United at Old Trafford

Crystal Palace lead deservedly through Andros Townsend’s early goal. They’ve kept a sluggish United at arm’s length without too much trouble and could have scored a second just before half-time.

Man Utd dominated most of the statistics, but it’s Palace who lead at Old Trafford. In truth, the hosts haven’t looked at the races and Townsend’s goal separates the sides at half time.

The visitors started on the front foot and had a reward, with Jeffrey Schlupp breaking down the left wing and fizzing a gorgeous ball into the box, where Townsend capitalized at the far post.
