Chelsea hero gives verdict on Thiago Silva after victory over Rennes

November 25th, 2020 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Joe Cole has rated Thiago Silva as the Premier League’s second-best centre-back after Virgil van Dijk.

The former Chelsea winger had his doubt over the suitability of the 36-year-old for the Premier League when it was reported that the Brazilian was coming to Stamford Bridge.

That’s according to Joe Cole, who has hailed the veteran Chelsea star as a ‘Rolls Royce’ of a player.

Speaking about Silva on BT Sport, Cole said: “He needed time to get into it and now he looks like a Rolls Royce and one of the best centre-halves in the league.

“I do not think they make centre-halves like him anymore. Apart from Van Dijk, I would say he is the best in the League. He has brought so much quality, on the pitch and off the pitch.

“For [Antonio] Rudiger, [Kurt] Zouma and [Andreas] Christensen next to him, he is a standard bearer.

“That is the level you want to get at if you want to class yourself as a world-class centre-half.”

November 25th, 2020 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Gary Neville has expressed his excitment over Chelsea’s clash with Tottenham on the weekend.

The former England man reckons the clash could give a huge insight into who will challenge Liverpool for the title.

He told his Sky Sports podcast: “I’m excited for next Sunday with Chelsea playing Tottenham. It’s an interesting season.

“We thought Chelsea might be interesting at the start of the season as they have a young, exciting squad – it looks like Frank Lampard is starting to get it right.

“He was still searching for his best team in the first few matches to try and fit everyone in. There were certain players that weren’t fit but now they are and he’s starting to work it out. They look pretty strong.

“Is it a season where Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard being up against each other in a title race? I thought Liverpool would run away with it, but not now, not with Virgil van Dijk’s injury.”

How Chilwell, Azpilicueta, Mount, other Chelsea stars celebrated win over Rennes on the social media

November 25th, 2020 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

It is no longer news that Chelsea have qualified for the Champions League knockout stages with two games to spare after Olivier Giroud’s last-minute winner at Rennes.

The Blues needed Krasnodar to lose and to grab all three points to get through — and they did so in thrilling style after Giroud’s 91st-minute header.

Callum Hudson-Odoi had earlier given Frank Lampard’s side the lead with a cool finish from Mason Mount’s lovely through ball, before Sehrou Girassy headed in what appeared to be a body blow for the Blues.

Speaking on BT Sport Frank Lampard says “I’m very happy to qualify with two games to spare.

“It was a really tough match for us to come here, they’re probably an underrated team with their recent result and we found that out tonight.

“But we also played well for big spells of the game ourselves, it was a tough, hard fought win.”

After the match, the Blues stars took to twitter to celebrate their victory in France

Mason Mount says he’s “speechless” after being honoured at Stamford Bridge

November 25th, 2020 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Mason Mount has admitted he was left ‘speechless’ after being honoured with a mural next to Stamford Bridge.

The stunning artwork of the England international is one of just five across the country as part of a campaign to launch FIFA 21 on PS5.

According to The Sun, Manchester City pair Phil Foden and Georgia Stanway each have a mural as do Tottenham ace Steven Bergwijn and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold – all near their respective clubs.

The five players chosen by EA Sports honour their FIFA Next ambassadors – footballers that are at the forefront of the next generation.

And Mount was delighted with his mural in Fulham that is being displayed outside Stamford Bridge.

He said: “As a lifelong Chelsea fan, having a mural installed just around the corner from Stamford Bridge, celebrating the next generation of emerging talent is amazing.

“I’m pleased with how my career has progressed to date, but the hard work never stops – this is just the start.”

The 21-year-old later shared a picture of the artwork on Instagram alongside the caption: “From the academy to having a mural next to the bridge! Speechless.”
