National team boss says Chelsea move for his key defender ‘done deal’

Hungary national team manager Marco Rossi has revealed that Fenerbahce centre-back Attila Szalai’s switch to Chelsea is a ‘done deal’.

The Fenerbahce player’s agents were in London last month to hold talks ahead of a £20million January move for the 23-year-old who has been watched by a number of Premier League sides.

Reports in Turkey last month suggested that Chelsea had agreed an initial €23.4m (£20m) deal with Fenerbahce for the 23-year-old ahead of the January transfer window.

Szalai, who is 6ft 4ins tall and started his career in Austria, has excelled in a three man defence and has 16 caps for his country.

He has made 21 appearances in all competitions for the Turkish giants so far this season, scoring two goals.

And now Szalai’s Hungary boss Rossi has all but confirmed the move at the Ussi Awards in Turin on Monday.

When asked about which Hungary player would be a good fit for Serie A by reporters, Rossi said, as cited by the Metro: “It’s hard to name just one player, but right now I see very well Attila Szalai, who plays for Fenerbache, but I think he is joining Chelsea.

“Clearly, he has been followed by important clubs in Spain, but apparently his move to Chelsea is a done deal. It would be a great player also for Italian football.”
