Chelsea legend John Terry hits back at MP Byrant as war of words continues over Abramovich

John Terry has hit back at Labour MP Chris Bryant after the Chelsea legend came under fire for his tribute to Roman Abramovich.

Former Blues skipper Terry publicly praised Abramovich after news he was selling the club was made public, despite questionable links between the Russian billionaire and Vladimir Putin.

The 41-year-old posted on social media: “Thank you Roman. The Best Owner in the WORLD.”

He also wrote on Twitter: “The best,” along with a picture of the pair together holding the Premier League trophy.

Bryant immediately responded by criticising Terry – both on social media and in Parliament, for his ‘appalling’ posts.

One fan though has stuck up for Terry and questioned the reason for Bryant’s condemnation.

Terry himself personally responded, and in doing so continued the war of words between the pair.

He sensationally aimed a personal dig at the MP for his part in the 2009 expenses scandal, and for voting in favour of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Terry seethed on Twitter: “The same MP that claimed fortunes in expenses of the tax payers money.

“Also the same MP who voted that we invade Iraq,” followed by a clown emoji.

Bryant had originally responded to Terry’s tribute to Abramovich: “I think @JohnTerry26 you should take this down ASAP.

“The people of Ukraine are being bombed, shelled and murdered while you celebrate Abramovich.”

He also said in Parliament: “I do not know if you’ve seen this but he [John Terry] has posted a photo with Abramovich who is one of Putin’s crony’s.

“What will the people of Ukraine think of the former England football captain?”

Abramovich has vowed to donate any profit made from selling the club to victims of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The 55-year-old wants £3billion for the club he bought for £140million back in 2003.

It’s reported that over 300 parties have expressed their interest in buying the Blues since they were put up for sale.

Antonio Conte reacts to Roman Abramovich’s decision to sell Chelsea

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte says Roman Abramovich selling Chelsea is ‘not good news’ for their fans.

Conte won the Premier League in 2016-17, followed by cup glory in 17-18, but he was sacked due to a fifth place league finish.

The Italian’s axing cost Roman £26million in compensation and legal fees, as Conte sued the club in a lengthy legal battle.

In a press conference he spoke out and said: “It is not good news for Chelsea fans.”

He seemed complimentary of the work Roman had done with the Blues.

Chelsea have beaten Conte’s Tottenham twice in 2022 already, and have not conceded a goal to the Lilywhites since August 2021.

Conte has previously labelled Abramovich as a very “passionate” man amid fresh Blues sale confirmation.

The Italian has provided the owner with two of the 21 trophies won since 2023 during his turbulent two-season stay in west London.

After reflecting on his turbulent time in SW6, Conte only had good things to say about a man he labelled as ‘very passionate’ for his football.

“I keep good memories with Chelsea, the club, with Mr Abramovich, who is a very passionate man for his football,” he said to The Telegraph in an interview back in 2020.

“It was incredible, especially in my first season, because he [Abramovich] was very, very close to me, asking about my football and my ideas.

“Many times he came to the training ground to meet me and I remember he wanted to watch the video about our game and about our preparation – the way we wanted to face the opponent.

“I think in my career, he was one of the most passionate men about football and I keep good memories about him and about the club, an important club in the world.”

Manchester United discuss transfer talks with Bayern Munich star

Man United have reportedly asked Robert Lewandowski’s representatives to keep them informed over the Bayern Munich forward’s future.

The 33-year-old Polish striker has less than 18 months left on his deal at the German side.

He could leave for nothing in June 2023 or, if the Bundesliga giants decide to cash in, possibly go this summer.

A number of clubs are beginning to circle – and now the Red Devils seem to have joined the chase.

That is according to 90 mins, who state there is ‘concrete’ interest from Old Trafford and the Premier League in Lewandowski.

Bukayo Saka reveals his Arsenal future decision

Bukayo Saka reportedly has no desire to leave Arsenal this summer, despite interest from Liverpool.

Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided a positive update on Saka’s for Gooners everywhere.

He told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel: “They’re also working on Bukayo Saka’s future because this boy is really special.

“It’s always Liverpool rumours, this is what I was asking yesterday and the answer I received was that Bukayo loves Arsenal, he loves the club, he’s a good guy and a genuine guy, and this is why he’s not planning to leave in the summer.

“He’s not focused on a new deal now because he wants to focus on the season, but at the end of the season he will have a meeting with Arsenal and discuss a new deal.”

Thomas Tuchel rebukes Chelsea fans over Abramovich chants before 4-0 win over Burnley

Thomas Tuchel has criticised Chelsea’s fans for chanting the name of owner Roman Abramovich in the middle of a minute’s applause for victims of the war in Ukraine before Saturday’s 4-0 win over Burnley.

Premier League clubs are making a show of solidarity with Ukraine in this weekend’s matches following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country, with a moment of ‘reflection and solidarity’ taking place before kick-off.

But as the home fans stood up for a minute’s applause at Turf Moor before Burnley’s clash with Chelsea, the clapping was suddenly drowned out by Chelsea fans chanting Abramovich’s name.

The Russian oligarch could face sanctions due to his alleged links to the Russian state – which he denies – and he announced on Wednesday that he was actively looking to sell the west London club he has owned since 2003.

Chelsea’s supporters were widely condemned over the chanting, which was clearly in poor taste, while the home fans at Burnley responded with a chorus of boos as the moment of reflection was sullied.

Now Tuchel has joined the condemnation and says Chelsea’s supporters picked an inappropriate moment to show their appreciation for the departing Abramovich and hopes they will join in with any show of solidarity with Ukraine in the future.

Asked about the Abramovich chants during the applause for Ukraine, Tuchel replied, as quoted by the Metro, at his post-match press conference: “It’s not the moment to do this.

“Listen, if we show solidarity we show solidarity and we should do it together.

“We take the knee together and if an important person from our club or another club unfortunately dies, we show a minute of respect. It’s not the moment to give other messages. It’s the moment to show respect.

“We do this because this is what we are also as a club. We show respect as a club and we need our fans to commit to this minute of applause.

“At this moment, we do it for Ukraine and there is no second opinion about the situation there. They have our thoughts and our support.

“We should stand together as a club. It’s not the moment for other messages.”
