Chelsea aim dig at Brighton as Marc Cucurella signs for Blues

Chelsea have completed the £62million signing of left-back Marc Cucurella – in time to make his debut at Everton tomorrow.

Cucurella had been strongly linked with Prem champions Manchester City.

But as Brighton stood firm on their asking price, Chelsea swooped in to hijack the deal.

The Blues rushed through the paperwork on his switch from Brighton before the midday deadline and are confident the Spaniard will be able to play in the Premier League season opener at Goodison Park.

In announcing the transfer, Chelsea made a dig at Brighton’s social media post earlier in the week.

As reports suggested that a deal had been agreed to sell Cucurella on Wednesday, Brighton tweeted: “CLUB STATEMENT: MARC CUCURELLA.

“Contrary to inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets this evening, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”

Referencing that tweet, Chelsea posted themselves: “CLUB STATEMENT: MARC CUCURELLA.

“Following reports from numerous media outlets this week, we can confirm an agreement has been reached with Brighton and Hove Albion for the signing of Marc Cucurella.”

Inter Milan relieved as Cesar Azpilicueta renews Chelsea contract

Inter have received good news from Chelsea, because the decision to extend Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract means they are no longer in the running for Denzel Dumfries.

The Spain international turns 33 later this month and is able to play any role in defence, but primarily is a right-back.

His contract had been due to expire in June 2023, making him a prime target for Barcelona this summer, something the Blaugrana never even tried to hide.

However, this evening Chelsea announced that Azpilicueta has extended his contract with them to June 2024.

The Premier League side had seen Dumfries as the ideal replacement for Azpilicueta should he leave, which was what prompted them to make the approach for the Dutch international.

Now that their captain Azpilicueta is staying, Chelsea will effectively back off from making a bid for Dumfries, who had been valued at €40m.

In his debut Serie A season, Dumfries contributed five goals and five assists in 33 games.
