Chelsea Player Ratings vs Salzburg: Silva, Havertz, Chalobah, others shine in Blues away win

October 26th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

KEPA ARRIZABALAGA – 7/10

Wasn’t really stretched in the first 45 but made a comfortable save to keep out Salzburg’s only shot on target.

Could do little about Adamu’s classy finish for the Salzburg goal.

Then made a string of smart stops in the closing stages to ensure Chelsea kept hold of their slender lead.

TREVOH CHALOBAH – 8

Looked composed and assured on the ball as he linked well with Pulisic down the right when the back three split.

Made a few goal-saving headed clearances in the second half as Chelsea were put under pressure from set-pieces.

THIAGO SILVA – 8
A class act at the heart of Chelsea’s back three. Positioned himself brilliantly to mop up.

His experience typified by his last-gasp clearance, sweeping up behind Kepa when the keeper failed to claim a high ball.

MARC CUCURELLA – 7

Has been harshly substituted in each of his last three games, but made sure that wasn’t going to be the case on this occasion as the Spaniard produced a mistake-free display.

He also looked to be the centre-back who tried to start the attacks and engaged with the midfield.

CHRISTIAN PULISIC – 6

Was energetic and vibrant without really offering any sort of end product.

Raced through with the score level at 1-1, but the ball wouldn’t quite come down for the American.

JORGINHO – 7

Started a brilliantly slick Chelsea move that carved Salzburg open, only for Aubameyang to be thwarted by Kohn.

Came within a whisker of putting Chelsea 2-1 up with a great header but it was cleared off the line in the nick of time.

MATEO KOVACIC – 9

Fired a delicious opener into the top corner with his “weaker” left foot after a superb start to the game from the Croatian midfielder.

Ran the middle of the park and looked a class above everyone around him.

Made way for Loftus-Cheek with 22 minutes of the 90 remaining.

CONOR GALLAGHER – 6

Clipped an inch-perfect cross in for Havertz whose header was too close to the keeper.

His running and energy cannot be sniffed at, but that final pass is something he still seems to be missing at the top level.

RAHEEM STERLING – 6

Just nine days on from Potter’s failed wingback experiment in the win over Aston Villa, Sterling was asked to play there again.

And it’s safe to say he still looks exposed defensively when playing that role, but going forward he is a superb outlet – linking up well with the front two when drifting inside.

KAI HAVERTZ – 8

Should have doubled Chelsea’s lead nine minutes before half-time but his close-range header was tame enough for Kohn to gather.

Then netted the goal of the night with a breathtaking effort which clipped the underside of the bar on its way into the top corner. Majestic.

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG – 4

His deflected header was brilliantly kept out by Kohn, before he wasted a gilt-edged chance in what would have been a breathtaking team goal.

These are the sort of games you would be expecting Aubameyang to find the back of the net in.

Now without a goal in four matches in all competitions.

SUBSTITUTES:

RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK (FOR KOVACIC, 68) – 6

Doesn’t provide the same level of quality as Kovacic but is a real physical presence in midfield – something which should not be underestimated when trying to see out a game late on.

CESAR AZPILICUETA (FOR PULISIC, 75) – 6

His leadership was evident in the closing stages as he barked orders and organised Chelsea’s defence when Salzburg put pressure on them from set-pieces.

ARMANDO BROJA (FOR AUBAMEYANG, 75) – 6

Looked isolated up front as Chelsea attempted to cling onto their lead late on.

Manchester United boss reveals his Cristiano Ronaldo decision after row

October 26th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Erik Ten Hag insists he wants to put the Cristiano Ronaldo controversy behind him after reinstating the club legend into the Manchester United squad.

The Red Devils boss axed Ronaldo from the game against Chelsea at the weekend after he had refused to come on as a substitute against Spurs the previous mid-week.

But after peace talks between the pair Ronaldo is back and set to start in tomorrow’s Europa League tie against FC Sheriff.

Ten Hag said: “It’s not difficult.

“But I think we said everything and we answered all the questions, he was out for one game and is back in the squad as usual.

“We will not answer anymore, so all the questions, I think, everything we explained and we have to focus on the game tomorrow, we have an important game because we want to be number one in the group.

“I don’t have to do it anymore, It’s done, he’s back, focus on the game, that’s important that Cristiano is involved.”

Guardiola engineers Man City move for Chelsea star

October 24th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Manchester City are interested in signing Chelsea star Kai Havertz, who has struggled since his move to England from Bayer Leverkusen.

Since making the move to Chelsea, Havertz has struggled to find consistent form. The German international produces moments of magic, with the winning goal in the Champions League final coming to mind, but there’s no doubt Chelsea fans will have been hoping for more from Havertz when he joined the club.

Now, according to Simon Phillips, via his Substack column, Manchester City are now interested in signing Havertz. It seems unlikely that Chelsea would be willing to strengthen a Premier League rival.

There’s no doubt Havertz has a wealth of talent, but he has struggled to produce consistently for Chelsea, and with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling added to the front line, his game time is decreasing.

Havertz has played in a host of positions during his time at Leverkusen and Chelsea, so his versatility could make him a useful option for Manchester City.

However, he may find it difficult to cement a regular starting place under Guardiola due to the wealth of talent he already has at his disposal.

(Watch Goal on Video) Fernandes doubles United lead! 69’… Man United 2-0 Tottenham

October 19th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Bruno Fernandes scores his first home goal of the season in style, it’s a calm, curling first-time finish.

The ball kindly falls for Fernandes just inside the box, but with the hard work to do he brings the ball under control before steering a shot across goal well out of the reach of Lloris. That is a classy goal!

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slots home the second into the near corner.

Chelsea work the ball well in the tight areas between the Milan defence and the ball is played towards Sterling and Aubameyang thanks to a lovely Mount flick off Kovacic’s pass.

But the ex-Arsenal man takes control and doubles the lead against his former side.

(Watch Goal on Video) Jorginho gives Chelsea the lead! 21’…AC Milan 0-1 Chelsea

October 11th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Jorginho converts from the spot after AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori was shown a red card.

Milan remain furious with the call.

But nevertheless the visitors are 1-0 ahead now.

Tomori pulled back on Mason Mount’s shoulder there and while Mount got the shot off the ref has given him his marching orders.

He and his team-mates are incensed that it’s not a red, but the ref has stuck to his decision and it seems VAR agree.

October 8th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

After plenty of chances in the first half, it’s Chelsea who go into the break with the lead thanks to a late Kai Havertz header.

Chelsea broke the deadlock. Mason Mount plays in a great cross from the right and it’s Kai Havertz whose looping header beats Jose Sa.

Half-Time Report: Two Chelsea stars receive plaudits as Fofana scores, goes off injured

October 5th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Arguably Chelsea’s best half of football this season.

Wesley Fofana got the goal but then went off injured.

Chelsea will be counting their blessings that they go into half-time at 1-0 up after that huge late chance for AC Milan, but the referee calls the first half to a close.

It is Wesley Fofana’s goal that separates the two teams at the break, but the Frenchman had to go off with an injury midway through the first half.

Mateo Kovacic and Loftus Cheek doing so well in the midfield more reason why Jorginho should be benched in crucial games. Thiago Silva yet exceptional despite his age.

Sterling messed up late passes. Kudos to Wesley Fofana on scoring his first goal for d team.

(Watch Goal on Video) Fofana scores! 24’… Chelsea 1-0 AC Milan

October 5th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Chelsea defender Wesley has put the west London club ahead in the Champions League clash against AC Milan at Stamford Bridge.

It’s four deliveries into the box from Chelsea that have ALL been met by the head of Thiago Silva.

Bennacer cannot get near the Brazilian in the box, who wins the header once more from a Ben Chilwell corner.

There is a scuffle as the ball bounces around in the middle of the box, but it is rolled into the bottom right corner from Wesley Fofana, who gets his first goal for Chelsea.
