November 30th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Double goalscorer Marcus Rashford has revealed the tragic reason he fell to his knees after celebrating his fantastic free kick for England – a close friend recently died from cancer.

The Manchester United striker bagged a brilliant double either side of fellow recalled attacker Phil Foden’s simple effort as the Three Lions lead Wales 3-0.

Rashford said: “He had quite a long battle with cancer. I’m pleased I scored for him, he was a big supporter and good friend of mine.

“He was someone who came into my life.”

He kneeled on the turf while pointing to sky with his eyes closed after scoring England’s first goal of the game.

November 29th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Christian Pulisic sweeps home the USA’s deserved breakthrough on 38 minutes.

Juventus in turmoil as entire board members resign

November 29th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Juventus have officially confirmed that all board members, including Andrea Agnelli, have resigned and have appointed Maurizio Scanavino as their new CEO.

Andrea Agnelli, Pavel Nedved and eight more board members, including CEO Maurizio Arrivabene, have resigned, Juventus confirmed with an official statement.

The Bianconeri are being investigated for suspicious transfers with inflated values in order to gain capital gains. Investigators looked into financial statements for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

2021-22 saw a year of record-breaking losses published by the Turin club, with a £220million (€254.3m) loss being registered by the Serie A giants.

The decision was made upon the proposal of president Agnelli, after the board agreed that it was in the best interest of the club for a new board to take over at Juventus.

According to various Italian media outlets, the unanimous decision comes as a result of the body’s involvement in the Prisma investigation, opened by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Turin Prosecutor also investigated the four months’ salaries Juventus players gave up in 2020, following the COVID pandemic. Investigators aim to prove that Juventus players didn’t give up on the entire sum, but only missed one month and continued to receive money thanks to private agreements with the club, contrary to what Juventus, one of the clubs listed on the stock market, had communicated.

Chelsea star Mason Mount defended

November 28th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Mason Mount faces “unfair criticism” and should be a “nailed on” starter.

That’s the view of former England midfielder Glenn Hoddle after Mount was singled out following the Three Lions’ 0-0 draw with the USA.

Some pundits also reckon Phil Foden should be chosen ahead of the Chelsea star – with Hoddle himself believing the Manchester City playmaker should start.

But Hoddle told Betfair: “Mason Mount is a great player and singling him out for criticism is unfair

“He didn’t do anything worse than any other player in the game against the USA. He nearly scored, he got himself into good positions.

Mason Mount is one of the best players we have in the country, and you would have him for 38 games a season.

“He’s nailed on to be in your team. The criticism has been unfair.”

Morocco boss reveals why No 1 goalkeeper disappeared after taking part in pre-match national anthem

November 27th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Morocco manager Walid Regragui revealed the reason why goalkeeper Yassine Bounou disappeared from the pitch right before kick-off.

Bounou was named in Regragui’s starting line-up and stood with the rest of his team-mates for the national anthems before the World Cup clash with Belgium at the Al Thumama Stadium.

All of a sudden, the North Africans’ second goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi posed for the team’s pre-match photo and made his way to the Moroccan goalposts.

The bizarre incident caught everyone out and even took the BBC commentators almost 25 minutes to realise the switch had happened.

The commentators even referred to Bounou – aka Bono – when it was actually Munir who made a save from Michy Batshuayi in the first half.

Regragui revealed the Sevilla keeper was still hurting from an injury he suffered in the World Cup opener against Croatia.

The Moroccan tactician claims the 31-year-old realised just before kick-off that he is not match fit and put the team above himself before admitting Munir should have his place.

Regragui told beIN Sports: “He took a whack against Croatia, he was unsteady.

“We tried until the last moment but after the warm-up, just before the match, he did not feel good and he had the honesty to give way to someone else.

“If you want to be in my squad you have to be 100 per cent and Yassine understood that and gave up his place to Munir, who had a great game.”

(Watch Highlights) Messi drags Argentina back into World Cup contention after Mexico defeat

November 26th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Argentina have bounced back with a major 2-0 win over Mexico at the Lusail Stadium.

And it was their star captain Lionel Messi who led the Albiceleste to this incredibly important victory that puts them back in the picture for the World Cup’s Last 16.

Messi opened the scoring with a stunning shot on 64 minutes from the edge of the box that ended up in Guillermo Ochoa’s bottom left corner.

Enzo Fernandez sealed the win with a screamer of his own after 87 minutes as his curling shot from the left hit Ochoa’s top left corner.

Fernandez received the ball from off a short corner and bends it beautifully into the top right corner of the net past Ochoa. A beautiful finish from the 21-year-old that looked to have wrapped this one up for Argentina.

Argentina dominated 58 per cent of possession throughout the encounter.

The Albiceleste registered a total of five shots, two of which were on target.

Mexico, on the other hand, produced four shots but only one of them was on target.

Argentina have therefore climbed off the bottom of the table and are second in Group C.

The Copa America winners are just one point behind Poland, who drew with Mexico and beat Saudi Arabia earlier today.

The Mexicans are now last with only one point, while Saudi Arabia are third with three.

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell gives injury update

November 25th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Ben Chilwell has sent a positive update on his rehabilitation from injury to followers of Chelsea as he continues his work to return to fitness during the break for the World Cup.

The full-back pulled up injured in added time against Dinamo Zagreb and eventually needed help off the pitch by Chelsea’s physios before leaving Stamford Bridge on crutches. Television cameras appeared to catch Chilwell telling teammate Mason Mount that his hamstring had ‘popped’

Indeed, Chilwell was not involved in Chelsea’s squads against Arsenal, Manchester City or Newcastle, with 18-year-old Lewis Hall slotting in at wing-back for the latter two fixtures. The 25-year-old started a rehabilitation programme with Chelsea’s medical department in early November after a scan revealed a ‘significant injury” for the defender.

However, supporters will be hoping that Chilwell is in contention for the return of the Premier League when the Blues face Bournemouth following Chilwell’s latest Instagram Story. The former Leicester star published a video of himself running on the treadmill accompanied by the comment: “Working”.

Having suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury last season, Chilwell only made it back onto the Stamford Bridge pitch in the Blues’ final game of the season against Watford after picking up the issue against Juventus in November 2021.

The careful management of his reintroduction to the first team had continued to be managed carefully with just eight starts to his name in 14 appearances this term.

(Watch Video) Neymar breaks down in tears after injury during Brazil win

November 24th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Neymar was in tears on Brazil’s bench after he was forced off with an ankle injury during the 2-0 win over Serbia in their World Cup opener on Thursday evening.

Two goals from Richarlison got Brazil’s World Cup campaign in Qatar off to a flying start, but one of the tournament favourites now face an anxious wait after their talisman was forced off in the closing stages of the second half.

Neymar was fouled nine times during the game against Serbia – more than any other player on the pitch – and he even played on for 12 minutes after he suffered the challenge which caused the damage to his ankle.

After being substituted with 10 minutes remaining, Neymar was treated by two physios on the bench but the 30-year-old’s pain was evident as he covered his face with his jersey while he was being consoled by his Brazil teammates.

After the match, photographers near Brazil’s bench captured the immediate swelling to Neymar’s right ankle.

Neymar was also seen visibly limping as he made his way back to Brazil’s dressing room.

Iranian boss reveals how his “secret” was divulged to England before 6-2 loss

November 24th, 2022 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Carlos Queiroz has accused an Iranian media outlet of helping the England team by revealing his starting line-up.

Sports news website Varsesh 3 published what it predicted would be Queiroz’s Team Melli XI on Monday morning.

That was just hours before the opener against Three Lions kicked off and Iran went on to lose 6-2 at the Khalifa Stadium in Doha.

Queiroz was not best pleased and sarcastically congratulated a reporter at the end of his press huddle following the team’s training session.

He said: “I cannot finish my statement without congratulating Varzesh 3.

“Congratulations. Because you did a good job putting our starting line-up in the press for the morning for the English team, congratulations.

“You are really a great hero, congratulations, good job.”
