Argentina secure round of 16 berth, gets “soft” opponents as Mexico crash out

Argentina top Group C after getting off to a horrible start with a loss to Saudi Arabia.

They will now play Australia in the round of 16, avoiding reigning champions France.

Premier League duo Julián Álvarez and Alexis Mac Allister got the goals for the Copa America champs.

An incredible night of breathless drama has ended with Argentina top of the pile – and joined in the Last 16 by Poland.

The Polish edged their way into second place ahead of Mexico on goal difference.

Gerardo Martino’s men paid the price for late goals conceded at both the end of tonight’s game, and their defeat to Argentina on Saturday.

Mexico conceded late on to Saudi Arabia, putting their goal difference one below Poland.

Saudi Arabia, despite beating the group winners on matchday one, finish bottom of the group.

Mexico had the last 16 in its sights for 40 minutes but ultimately their desperate chasing wasn’t enough.

Tata Martino’s side did all they could. They did their part, got the win but Argentina simply couldn’t do them a favor and find a third.

Ultimately, Saudi Arabia’s last-gasp goal sees both sides eliminated with Mexico agonizingly making its first group-stage exit in 44 years on goal difference.
