Arsenal legend explains why referee was wrong in his decision to disallow Timo Werner’s goal against Southampton

Arsenal legend and TV pundit Paul Merson disagrees with the referee and VAR’s decision to overrule Chelsea star Timo Werner’s goal against Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

The German tucked away a tidy header in the first half to double Chelsea’s advantage following Trevor Chalobah’s opener.

But VAR intervened as they checked a foul by Cesar Azpilicueta in the build-up.

Ref Martin Atkinson consulted the touchline monitor and decided to bring play back, ruling out Werner’s goal.

Werner’s goal was disallowed because it was deemed that Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta fouled Kyle Walker-Peters in the build-up.

Merson said on Sky’s Soccer Saturday coverage: “Seriously? How far are they taking this back? That [incident] was on Friday that was!

“I don’t think it’s a foul, Azpilicueta just catches him but seriously Walker-Peters just falls over”
