Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez found guilty of driving offence just days after racist chants

Enzo Fernandez has been found guilty of failing to identify the driver of a Porsche which allegedly ran a red light in Wales last November, according to the Mirror.

The incident happened in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire on 28 November 2023, with a Porsche Cayenne going through a red light on Church Street. Fernandez was accused of being the driver and of driving the same vehicle without insurance on the same day.

But no plea was entered for those charges and they were withdrawn. The Chelsea has though been found guilty of failing to provide information to Dyfed-Powys Police regarding the incident on 27 December.

The verdict was handed down at a hearing at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and he is due to be sentenced on 11 September. Magistrates adjourned the sentencing hearing to consider if there are mitigating circumstances for not disqualifying him from driving.

The incident came two days after Chelsea were beaten 4-1 away at Newcastle, a game in which Fernandez played all 90 minutes. He was absent from Wednesday’s hearing while he celebrates Argentina’s Copa America win.

Those celebrations have been marred though after Fernandez broadcast footage of himself and his Argentina team-mates singing the first two lines of a ‘racist and transphobic’ chant.

The chant begins: “On passport, French nationality, listen, spread the word, they play in France, but they are all…”, before someone is heard saying “cut the video”. It is unclear whether the players continued singing the chant.
