European Super League: Florentino Perez set to sue UEFA

April 25th, 2021 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

There are reports that Florentino Perez is planning to sue UEFA after his European Super League collapsed just days after its emergence.

But, according to Corriere della Sera, the Super League project is ‘not over’.

The breakaway competition was announced exactly one week ago and created an earthquake in the football world.

The project collapsed within 48 hours with the six Premier League clubs that announced their withdrawal on Tuesday.

Juventus, Milan, Real Madrid and Barcelona haven’t formally left the competition as they could sue those who are quitting, as The Financial Times explained on Wednesday.

While UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin insists the breakaway clubs could face sanctions, Florentino Perez considers suing the European football governing body.

Florentino believes UEFA can’t act as the organisers and the regulators of European competitions and reportedly wants to file an antitrust complaint.

He believes UEFA have a monopoly and is preventing clubs from creating alternative tournaments.

According to the report, the Madrid-based European Super League Company SL has not dissolved, and at least four clubs are still part of it.
