Frank Lampard reveals what prompted David Luiz’s move to Arsenal, sheds light on reported row with Brazilian

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has explained the circumstances that led to David Luiz’s move to Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

The centre-back Luiz shocked the Blues by agreeing to move to the Emirates in a £7million deal, despite signing a new two-year contract in May.

Chelsea broke their club policy of only offering players over the age of 30 one year extensions for by offering Luiz a two-year deal earlier this year.

But the arrival of the Stamford Brdige club’s legend Frank Lampard changed all that as he reportedly told the Brazilian that he would not get an automatic shirt as opposed to what he used to enjoy under former manager Maurizio Sarri.

“David Luiz has obviously left and gone to Arsenal,’ Lampard told journalists at Cobham on Friday.

“We had some honest conversations over the last week because I know him well and the conclusion of that was he is gone.

“It’s an area of the pitch where we have competition. I don’t have number ones or twos. They have to fight for that shirt. I wish him the best because he has been a big part of our history.”

On the reported spat between him and Luiz, Chelsea manager insisted the decision for the defender to train on his own on Wednesday had been made with preparations for the club’s trip to Old Trafford in mind.

“There certainly wasn’t a strike or fallout so I want to make that clear straight away,” he continued.

“I always expected honesty from a manager whatever the news and I think I got that back from David.

“The day David didn’t train was a decision that I made because it was clear the way we were going. I am very happy with the squad I have got now and my focus is working on that.”
