How Chelsea lost UEFA Super Cup to Liverpool on penalties (Match Report)

August 15th, 2019 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to win the 2019 UEFA Super Cup after a 2-2 draw at Vodafone Arena, Istanbul, Turkey.

This was an all-English edition of the Super Cup, as Chelsea won the Europa League with Maurizio Sarri, while Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur to the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah tested Kepa Arrizabalaga early on and at the other end Pedro Rodriguez struck the crossbar from close range.

Summer signing Christian Pulisic made an immediate impact, as his divine pass sent Olivier Giroud to turn in at the far post, then he hit the back of the net himself, only for it to be ruled offside.

Liverpool immediately hit back after the restart, with substitute Roberto Firmino finding Sadio Mane to equalise.

The Reds significantly raised their game in the second half and only a sensational double Kepa save from Salah and the Virgil van Dijk follow-up, which he palmed on to the woodwork, managed to deny them the lead.

Jorginho’s through ball had released Mason Mount to fire into the far bottom corner, but it was correctly flagged offside.

It went to extra time and Liverpool came out fighting again, taking the lead for the first time through Mane’s brace. He started the move down the left flank, combined with Firmino and got back on to the pass to fire in off the underside of the bar.

Moments later, Chelsea were awarded a penalty, as Tammy Abraham got to the ball ahead of Adrian and Jorginho coolly converted with his trademark feint. Or Jorghino, which is how the Italo-Brazilian’s name was accidentally written on his jersey this evening. He became the first Italy international to score in a UEFA Super Cup since Pippo Inzaghi for Milan in 2007.

Chelsea had the best chances to win it in extra time, Abraham just wide and a one-handed Adrian save on Mount from Jorginho’s assist, but the trophy was decided on spot-kicks.

Kepa twice got a hand to penalties from Divock Origi and Trent Alexander-Arnold, but couldn’t keep them out of the net. Instead, the only save was the final one from Adrian, sticking out a leg to parry the weak and central Abraham effort.
