England have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup by beating Nigeria on penalties after drawing 0-0 in 120 minutes of action on Monday morning.
They rode their luck and made it through spells of dominance from Nigeria – as well as surviving extra time with ten players.
In the shootout, it was composure from nearly every player and they’re through to the next round. Incredible scenes as Sweet Caroline plays out on the sound system.
It was Georgia Stanway who took England’s first penalty. She looked confident walking up to the spot but failed to hit the target, sending it wide of the left post.
England were, however, handed a lifeline as Nigeria international Desire Oparanozie also failed to score – firing her shot wide of the post.
Beth England stepped up next for the Lionesses and fired the ball into the roof of the net to see Sarina Wiegman’s take the lead.
Michelle Alozie went next for Nigeria and skied it over the bar – giving England full control of the penalty shootout.
Rachel Daly capitalised on Alozie’s miss and scored from the penalty shot – with a rocket of a shot into the top left-hand-corner.
Rasheedat Ajibade managed to find the back of the net to get Nigeria on the scoreboard before Alex Greenwood stepped up for England.
Greenwood slipped the ball into the bottom right corner to see England go 3-1 up and edge closer to a place in the quarter-finals.
