Jorginho rejects Maurizio Sarri’s tag, says “I arrived here because of my hard work…”

Jorginho is resolute in his attempt to free himself from being branded Maurizio Sarri’s boy, declaring he wants to be known as a Chelsea player, rather than just someone who works with former manager of the club.

The former Napoli star came to Stamford Bridge with his former boss at the Serie A club as the linchpin in Sarri’s formation.

His emergence led to Cesc Fabregas’ exit from Stamford Bridge, with the Spaniard making reference to the close relationship between the two Italians as a reason for his departure from Chelsea.

The Italian midfielder had worked under Sarri for the majority of the past four years before the manger’s exit from Chelsea this summer.

Now playing under Frank Lampard, Jorginho has challenged himself to make sure he proves himself to the Chelsea supporters this season.

In an interview with Esporte Interativo, Jorginho said: ‘I was a little sad seeing people thinking I arrived here only because of [Sarri].

‘I arrived here because of my hard work, my day to day work, my sacrifices.’

Sarri brought Jorginho to Chelsea from Napoli in 2018, and he has so far played 56 games for them. Seen as an integral part of ‘Sarri-ball,’ the midfielder failed to live up to expectation last season.

However, good performances in the Europa League final and the UEFA Super Cup, according to the Daily Mail, have started to turn the heads of Chelsea fans.

He scored the equalising penalty in extra time, and also scored his spot kick in the shootout.

‘It’s a challenge for me to show the fans that thanks to my work it’s why I got here,’ Jorginho continued.

‘I want to take this opportunity to have a good season and also for my name to be recognised by Jorginho who plays for Chelsea, not Jorginho who only works with Sarri.’

He has now proved he can play outside of Sarri’s system and Chelsea fans will be hoping for more good performances this season, especially following their opening 4-0 defeat to Manchester United.
