REVEALED: Why Jurgen Klopp rejected Real Madrid approach

October 15th, 2019 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

There are claims that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp turned down an advance from Real Madrid prior to taking up his role on Merseyside.

Former Reds striker Robbie Fowler has given an interview in which he explained that Klopp informed him that Madrid, along with Manchester United, were turned down by the German.

Fowler goes on to explain that Klopp turned down those clubs because of ‘commercial influences’ and instead accepted the role at Anfield due to ‘identity’ and ‘history’.

“I did an interview with him a couple of years ago and he told me he turned down a couple of super-rich clubs after Dortmund – one of them was definitely Manchester United and the other was probably Real Madrid,” Fowler told The Mirror, as cited by Diario AS.

“Because he hated how they were focused solely on commercial influences. He said he liked Liverpool because they had a balance between the money needed to reach the top and the history and identity of the club and their fans.”

It is tricky, according to Football Espana, to determine what period of time Fowler is referring to, as Klopp was instilled as Reds boss in October 2015 – three months before Rafael Benitez was sacked at Los Blancos and replaced by Zidane.
