Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag reacts to Andre Onana’s mistakes in 3-3 draw with Galatasaray

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has refused to blame André Onana despite two mistakes from the Cameroon goalkeeper contributing to a 3-3 draw with Galatasaray on Wednesday.

United’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds are hanging by a thread after they twice gave up two-goal leads at Rams Park.

Ten Hag’s team led 2-0 and 3-1 but Onana let in Hakim Ziyech free kicks either side of half-time to contribute to a result that leaves them bottom of Group A.

“He is OK,” said Ten Hag.

“As I said, it is not about individuals. Of course, individual errors in football can make a difference and you take responsibility for it, but it is always about the team.

“This team is good, all the players in the squad are good and deserve the best, to play for Manchester United, because they are brilliant players. And that counts for the whole squad.”

United have not yet been eliminated from the Champions League despite winning just one of their five games, but their chances of reaching the round of 16 are slim.

They need to beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on matchday six and hope Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen draw. A win for either team will put United out.

They were impressive for large spells against Galatasaray, but their defensive vulnerability has meant only Antwerp have conceded more goals in this year’s group stage.

“I think as a team we played very well,” added Ten Hag.

“We win and lose together. You see the progress in this team. I take many positives from this game. Some mistakes, we played like I want my team to play. It was enjoyable to watch that: proactive, dynamic, brave and we scored great goals.

“Even after we had some setbacks, we kept going until the end and we should have won with big chances from Scott McTominay and Facundo Pellistri. Of course, I am disappointed because we should have managed the game better, we will learn from that.”

Manchester United set to hijack Chelsea move for Champions League hero

June 16th, 2023 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Chelsea could reportedly see their move for Inter Milan keeper Andre Onana HIJACKED as Manchester United enter the transfer race.

The Blues are in the market for a new stopper as ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino prepares for his reign at Stamford Bridge.

And Cameroonian Onana has emerged as Chelsea’s No1 target between the posts.

But, according to The Guardian, they face competition from United who are looking for someone to rival David de Gea.

The Spaniard suffered dips in form last season but he looks set to sign a new deal on the contract which expires this month.

De Gea is even ready to take a pay cut of around 50 per cent of the current £375,000-a-week wages he has.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford is among the other names linked with United.

Mauricio Pochettino disagrees with Chelsea over summer target

May 8th, 2023 by Olasunkanmi Ibikunle

Mauricio Pochettino is not on board with the club’s plans to move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer, according to reports.

The 51-year-old is expected to take over at Stamford Bridge when the season has finished and the club appear to be working towards planning for the summer transfer window already.

Chelsea transfer chiefs have discussed making a move for the ex-Ajax goalkeeper. But according to the Daily Mail, Pochettino is not keen on the Cameroonian stopper, who has been linked with a possible swap deal with Romelu Lukaku.

David Raya has also been linked with the Blues as it looks likely that Chelsea could part ways with one of Edouard Mendy or Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer.
