French club forced to terminate every player’s contract

Six-time Ligue 1 winners Bordeaux have gone part-time and been forced to drop to the third tier plus terminate every player’s contract.

The former Champions League club could be liquidated in court after takeover talks with Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group fell through.

Bordeaux finished midway in Ligue 2 last term but have dropped an appeal against demotion for financial issues.

The club on Thursday said they will become an amateur club for the first time in almost 90 years after filing for bankruptcy.

They had announced earlier in the week that they would accept their relegation to the third-tier Championnat National by French football’s financial watchdog, the DNCG.

Bordeaux, based in France’s southwest, won the last of their six top-flight titles in 2009.
