Euro 2024 hero returns to Chelsea, makes four-word statement

Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella has returned to Cobham for pre-season training ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The left-back took a two-week break after Spain’s victory over England in the Euro 2024 final on July 14, but he’s back early, eager to impress new head coach Enzo Maresca.

Cucurella ended last season on a high note with the Blues under Mauricio Pochettino and continued his excellent form into the Euros, where he was a key player for Luis de la Fuente’s team.

The 26-year-old played in six of Spain’s seven Euro matches and even assisted Mikel Oyarzabal’s late winning goal in the final against England. While Cucurella is back at Cobham, he won’t be joining his Chelsea teammates in the United States.

This match against Inter is just one week before Chelsea start their Premier League campaign against reigning champions Manchester City.

In the wake of Chelsea’s 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Celtic, Paolo Maresca made it clear that the stars of his squad are enjoying a well-deserved break. “No, not one of them is coming. They are on holiday. They deserve it,” stated Maresca, pinpointing August 6 as the date for their return with Marc being the possible exception by turning up at Cobham slightly sooner.

The Spanish defender, Cucurella, defied expectations and returned to Chelsea’s training grounds ahead of schedule, announcing his comeback with a social media post captioned: “Back to the office.”

Marc Cucurella’s agent sheds light on defender’s Chelsea future

Spain left-back Marc Cucurella is happy at Chelsea and is set to stay at Stamford Bridge this coming season, according to his agent.

Chelsea, under new coach Enzo Maresca, are in talks to sign FC Basel’s versatile defender Renato Veiga, who can also play at left-back.

“He is very comfortable and happy at Chelsea and in London,” Cucurella’s agent Aleix Pique told Cadena Ser radio. “His idea is to continue. Under normal circumstances, he will continue.”

Cucurella, 25, recently completed his second season with the Blues and has started in five of Spain’s six games at Euro 2024. His contract with Chelsea runs until June 2028.

Spain boss condemns German fans over Marc Cucurella

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has hit out at the supporters who booed and jeered Marc Cucurella during his side’s Euro 2024 victory over France, claiming they ‘do not represent German society’ as a whole.

It was heartbreak for France as Spain came from behind to win 2-1 in Munich, with Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo scoring in quick succession after Randal Kolo Muani’s headed opener in the eighth minute.

Chelsea left-back Cucurella has been one of the surprise stars for Spain in Germany, starting all but one of his nation’s matches en route to Sunday’s showpiece.

However, loud boos rang out whenever Cucurella touched the ball versus France and many viewers were left confused as to why the defender was copping so much abuse inside the Allianz Arena.

It soon became apparent that the culprits were not disgruntled French fans, rather neutral German supporters venting their frustrations after the curly-haired full-back escaped punishment for handball in last Friday’s quarter-final.

“We think we’ve worked out why Marc Cucurella is getting booed, by the way,” Steve Wilson explained on BBC’s commentary of the game.

“The reason is because, the German press have made a lot of this, in the game against Germany, they had a shot which hit Cucurella on the hand inside the penalty area.

“They felt the hand was away from the body, it was on the front page of the German papers the other day, I thought he was getting booed by the French fans. It’s not, it’s the German fans who feel they should be in this semi final.”

After Anthony Taylor waved away calls for handball against Cucurella in Spain’s quarter-final victory over Germany, UEFA released a statement explaining why the Premier League official had in fact made the correct decision.

“Cucurella’s hand was not in an unnatural position at the time it was hit by the ball,” the statement read.

Facing the media after Spain’s defeat of France, De la Fuente condemned the treatment of Cucurella by German supporters in Munich and claimed the booing only provided the left-back with extra motivation.

“I don’t know the reason for the booing of Cucurella, but all it did was motivate him,” the triumphant Spain manager told reporters.

“I am against disrespect and those who booed do not represent German society.”

“I’ve been telling him to sign for Chelsea”: Blues star tells his national team mate

Marc Cucurella has revealed he’s been trying to convince Spain team-mate Nico Williams to snub Barcelona and join Chelsea while at Euro 2024.

Barca are keen to bring Williams to the Nou Camp this summer following his impressive spell at La Liga rivals Athletic Bilbao and his superb performances at the Euros.

The 21-year-old, who has a £46.5m release clause, has started three of Spain’s four games over in Germany and scored in their last-16 victory over Georgia.

Spain defender Cucurella believes Williams would be a ‘great signing’ for Barcelona but admits he hopes he moves to Chelsea, who have also expressed interest in a summer deal.

‘He is a great player, he is bringing out all his potential,’ Cucurella told Spanish outlet SPORT when asked about Williams.

“It is a source of pride that he is on our team, that he is our teammate and with players like him everything is easier.

“He would be a great signing [for Barcelona], but it all depends on what he wants. I’ve been telling him to sign for Chelsea…

“In the end everything depends on him, he is very young, with a lot of experience. I think he will be a great player.”
