Timo Werner reveals why “I told the manager to take me off”, explains his confusion over referee’s penalty decision

Timo Werner has revealed why he asked the manager Thomas Tuchel to take him off during the Premier League encounter against Sheffield United, saying: “I have a dead leg from that penalty tackle.”

Two goals from Mason Mount in the fist half and the second goal via a penalty kick by Jorginho were all Chelsea needed to coast home to 2-1 win over Sheffield United.

The Germany international was the reason behind the two goals which earned Chelsea the three points from the match at Bramall Lane.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Timo Werner said: “I think it was a good win for us, it was a difficult game against a tightly-defended Sheiffield.

“From myself, again, no goal, but it’s good to see I can help the team with other things- so I keep going.

“Two assists like today is good, but as a striker you want to score.

“It’s a long period in my career not to score, but you have to keep trying and the goals will come.”

On his new manager, he says: “Every manager is different in how they want to play- he gives us lots of ideas, so now I’m a left ten.

“It’s very good for me and I think the last wins were a good move from the manager.”

When asked on the ref’s decision not to immediately point to the penalty spot, Werner says: “I was shocked, as I thought it was a clear penalty, I pushed the ball away from him [Ramsdale] and he got me.

“VAR is good and helped the referee. In football when someone does mistakes a goal comes -both teams made mistakes today. “

On the injury he’s suffered tonight, Werner says: “I have a dead leg from that penalty tackle – the 10/15 minutes after were hard, so I told the manager to take me off.

“I think it’s better to have 11 fit players on the pitch not ten and a half. “
