Diego Simeone was struck by plastic bottles as he ran down the tunnel at Old Trafford following Atletico Madrid’s triumph over Manchester United on Tuesday night.
Simeone’s side knocked United out of the Champions League and moved into the quarter-finals of the competition after a 41st-minute header Renan Lodi gave them a 1-0 (2-1 aggregate) win.
Following the final whistle, the Atletico manager sprinted down the touchline and headed for the dressing room as usual. However, the United fans decided to launch bottles at the 51-year-old.
However, when heading back to the changing rooms after Atletico’s victory over Manchester United, he was attacked by the fans.
Supporters lunched plastic water bottles onto the pitch after the game. Several of the bottles hit the Argentine manager as he passed through.
Simeone did not stop to react to what the fans were doing. Instead he sprinted down the tunnel to wait for his team to return from the pitch.
The Argentine hardly ever shakes hands after the game and typically runs down the tunnel as soon as the referee puts the whistle to his lips.
