Newcastle United took a major step towards Champions League qualification as they thrashed hapless Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 at St James’ Park.

Just one place separated the sides at kick-off but they were chasms apart once the game started as Spurs astonishingly found themselves 5-0 down with only 21 minutes played.

Newcastle led within 70 seconds, Jacob Murphy tapping in after Hugo Lloris failed to deal with a shot from Joelinton, and it was a sign of things to come.

Joelinton himself made it two when a long ball bypassed Spurs’ entire defence, the Brazilian duly rounding Lloris to roll into an empty net.

Murphy then scored from long range to make it 3-0 in just the ninth minute – again benefitting from questionable goalkeeping.

A quickfire brace from Alexander Isak make it 5-0, the first of those goals made possible by a brilliant Joe Willock through-ball.

Harry Kane scored a consolation goal for Tottenham shortly after the break, but substitute Callum Wilson restored Newcastle’s five-goal advantage.

Victory lifts the Magpies to third in the Premier League and 59 points – six more than fifth-placed Spurs, who have played a game more.

Meanwhile, Cristian Stellini takes ‘full responsibility’ for Tottenham’s shocking 6-1 defeat to Newcastle United, admitting he should not have abandoned all Antonio Conte’s tactics, while fans believe the ex-coach was right about their club.

The Italian was assistant manager to Conte for many years at Juventus and Inter, but now is flying solo after taking over for the rest of the season following Conte’s decision to walk away last month.

His position in that role has to now be in doubt after a disastrous 6-1 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United, in which they were already 4-0 down after 21 minutes.

“There’s no words to explain a performance like this. The first 25 minutes were the worst I have ever seen,” said Stellini in his press conference.

“I hope that the system we changed to give us energy was the wrong decision. If it was that, it’s my responsibility. We played with four at the back and if this is the mistake, it’s my mistake.”
