Angry Frank Lampard identifies reasons Chelsea lost to Sheffield United

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has identified the reasons the Blues were defeated by Sheffield United, stating that his boys “were too slow”, and “weren’t getting our wingers into the game”.

The London club were stunned by Sheffield United conceding three goals in a crucial match that may determine their fate in securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.

The Blues were completely outplayed by the in-form Blades, with two goals from David McGoldrick either side of Oli McBurnie’s header securing a third win in four matches that lifts the Yorkshire club into the top six.

Lampard’s side could not break down their hosts’ defence.

After the match, furious Lampard told Sky Sports: “They were better than us physically, better than us mentally, better with the ball. So you lose the game.

“They were also stronger than us. With no crowd you can hear every voice. All I could hear were Sheffield United voices. They are a good team. If you come here and perform below par this is what will happen.

“We matched them shape wise. We were too slow and weren’t getting our wingers into the game. We tried to get control, which we did but weren’t threatening. At 2-0 down you make it difficult for yourselves.

“You analyse all season and review and move forward. We need to put that to bed quickly and fight for the top four.
I learned a lot today – I learned a lot that I won’t forget.

“We might be outside the top four when we play again but it’s not about that right now – I’m more concerned about this performance.

“We will see where we are when we approach Norwich. But we can’t approach Norwich or Manchester United or Wolves like we did today.”
