Arsenal sack Unai Emery, club legend takes over as interim head coach

Arsenal have terminated the appointment of Unai Emery and his coaching team after the spate of poor outings by the team.

The Gunners were beaten at home last night by Eintracht Frankfurt after Daichi Kamada’s brilliant double earned the Germans an away victory in the Europa League clash.

Emery came into the match having failed to lead his team to victory in their previous six outings, and defeat made it their longest winless run since February 1992.

Josh Kroenke, on behalf of Arsenal Board, said: “Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

A club statement read: “The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required.

“We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward.

“The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.”
