Aston Villa manager gives injury update amid reports two key players are ruled out against Chelsea

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has reacted to reports that Anwar El Ghazi is a major doubt for the game with Chelsea, stating that medical staff will assess the extent of the injury suffered by the winger.

The Dutchman was substituted in the first half against Manchester United, straight after he set up Villa’s opening goal.

El Ghazi whipped in the cross that ultimately led to Jack Grealish scoring a goal of the season contender, but was forced off moments later.

“He’s got a whack on the knee. It’s too early to say, we’ll have a look at him when we get back to Bodymoor Heath,” Smith said as cited by Birmingham Live.

“We’ve got a structure, a way of playing the players are accustomed to. It was a like-for-like switch. Yes, we missed Ghazi because he’s been playing very well for us, scored last week and had just gone past their left-back before putting in a cross which Jack’s ended up scoring from.”

Trezeguet came in for the injured winger and Smith has no worries about starting him when they face Chelsea in midweek.

“It’s a disappointment losing him but, in Trezeguet, we’ve got a top international as well and he came on and did the job I expected of him.”

Aston Villa full-back Frederic Guilbert will also miss Wednesday’s fixture with Chelsea.

The Frenchman upended United left-back Brandon Williams just before the half-time whistle at Old Trafford with the scores level at 1-1.

The yellow is Guilbert’s fifth of the season and automatically receives a one-match suspension. He will now miss the game with Frank Lampard’s men, the first time Dean Smith will be unable to call upon him this season.
