Chelsea set to recall highly-rated Blues starlet from loan spell

Reports in England claim Chelsea are contemplating recalling Ethan Ampadu from his loan spell with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.

The Blues are concerned by the Welshman’s lack of game time in the Bundesliga, after making the switch which was designed to help his development.

The decision to rethink Ampadu’s short-term future comes after Wales manager Ryan Giggs claimed the defender, who can also play midfield, needs to be playing regular football.

The proposition of joining Leipzig was meant to ensure just that, but things haven’t gone to play since Ampadu departed Stamford Bridge for the season.

He has yet to make an appearance for Leipzig so far this campaign, despite being in their match day squad on a regular basis, report the Daily Express.

In fact, he has played just one game all season which came for his country in the Euro 2020 qualifier win over Azerbaijan.

Giggs hinted that Ampadu cannot expect to feature regularly for Wales should he not be playing for RB Leipzig.

“It is a concern because Ethan is at the age now where he has to play,” the Manchester United hero said.

“He’s had a few problems there injury-wise, nothing serious but little aches and pains.

“The last few camps he’s looked so much better in training.

“He is such a talent it’s hard to ignore. But it’s very difficult for him to play 90 minutes and back-to-back games, because he’s not had the minutes.

“You’ve seen it work with the likes of Jadon Sancho, who have done well abroad.

“I think [loans abroad will] happen more and more, but they’ve got to play.”
