Germany boss Joachim Low reveals why he didn’t use Havertz against Spain, says “it’s right moment for” him to join Chelsea

Germany national team head coach Joachim Low believes it is the ‘right time’ for Kai Havertz to sign for Chelsea.

The deal had been on the cards for several weeks, and the Blues announced the 21-year-old as their new player on Friday.

Havertz has been an exceptional player for Bayer Leverkusen for the past couple of seasons, featuring in more than 150 games for his former side.

To complete the £62million deal, Havertz was left on the bench for Germany’s 1-1 draw with Spain, before being allowed to leave their camp in Stuttgart to head to London.

Havertz has been at Chelsea’s training ground doing some individual training ahead of meeting up with his new team-mates in the coming week.

And his national team head coach believes that it is the right moment for one of his star players to head to the Premier League.

“We were in two minds about Kai,” Low admitted.

“On the one hand, his ability on the ball would’ve helped us against Spain, but the risk of an injury before a transfer of this magnitude is too great.

“The bad thing about the transfer is that the Bundesliga has lost a top player. But by moving abroad, it’ll help Kai’s development. You mature abroad.

“Kai was sure that he wanted the move and he’s mentally prepared for it. Chelsea is a good club with lots of young players.

“I don’t think that this has come a year or two too soon for Kai; it’s the right time for him.”
