Manchester City star to miss Chelsea clash as FA hands Pep Guardiola’s key player ban

Manchester City star has been handed one-match ban thereby ruling him out of the match against Chelsea at the Etihad on November 23.

The Portugal international is also expected to pay £50,000 fine for his tweet about teammate Benjamin Mendy, who he compared to the character on the front of packets of Conguitos.

The FA has alleged that Silva’s tweet brought the game into disrepute and that the post constituted an “aggravated breach” of its rules on social media behaviour because it appeared to reference the left-back’s race.

Although the FA said the intent wasn’t racist, they decided to ban the player for Manchester City’s next match and this means he won’t be able to take on Chelsea.

“Many persons would have taken offence to the content,” the FA said.

“The player did not himself intend the post to be insulting or in any way racist.

“It is clear that the tweet was intended to be no more than a joke between close friends.”However, this was not a private communication between two friends.

“The post was on a social media platform exposed to the 600,000 followers of a high-profile and well-respected professional footballer.

“Many persons viewing the imagery depicted in the tweet would have taken offence to the content as being insulting by reference to race, colour and ethnic origin in a way that unquestionably brings the game of football into disrepute.”

Riyad Mahrez is expected to replace the 25-year-old on the right-hand side of an attacking trio alongside Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero.
