Jose Mourinho expresses his fear after Chelsea defeat, commends Lampard, players over performance against Liverpool

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has expressed his fear for his former club after Chelsea fans applauded the team after a second defeat at Stamford Bridge in six days, saying: “I hope they don’t get used to it.”

The Blues are still without a win at home under Frank Lampard, but the home support expressed their admiration for a promising performance in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Liverpool.

But Mourinho, whose old Chelsea side was renowned for being near-invincible at home, thinks such a reaction can spell the beginning of the end for a club at the top.

“I hope they don’t get used to it,” Mourinho said of the defeat on Sky Sports .

“That’s a very important thing, because when you start accepting defeats just because your team played well and just because your players gave their best, a performance for people to be proud of… I think when you get used to it, that’s when the big clubs stop being big clubs.

“So I don’t think they should get used to it. But I think it shows that the people are ready for what the season is going to be for them.

“They are ready to support one of the best professionals that I have ever worked with, a manager with potential.”

After seeing a Cesar Azpilicueta goal ruled out for offside, Chelsea went into half-time 2-0 down to goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino.

An improved performance in the second half saw N’Golo Kante pull a goal back, while Mason Mount and Michy Batshuayi missed good opportunities to level the score late on, report Goal.

Mourinho says he likes what Lampard is trying to do at Stamford Bridge, but had a note of caution ahead of what he sees as a difficult season.

“You look today at the performance and the result and the reality of the numbers is that Liverpool are 10 points ahead of Chelsea,” he said.

“So let’s make it clear and objective: Chelsea are not going to fight for the title. So let’s support what looks like is their philosophy, which is to give time to the players and to the manager.

“I like their idea of play. I think the style of play that they are trying to play is clearly adapted to what football is nowadays and is adapted to the players they have.

“But in this moment I think they are too far [behind] to compete for the title, so even when the transfer window opens for Chelsea it’s not going to be with one or two players that they will become a force to fight for the title.”

Christian Pulisic determined to succeed at Chelsea despite “a very physical (Premier) League”

Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic insists he hasn’t been deterred by the physical nature of the Premier League and is ready to ‘show everyone’ what he can do.

The America international has endured a tough start to his Chelsea career following his arrival from Borussia Dortmund, showing only fleeting glimpses of his potential before he was dropped by Frank Lampard for the recent matches against Wolves and Valencia.

Extra pressure has been heaped on the 21-year-old given he was viewed by some as a direct replacement for Eden Hazard, but Pulisic that represents an unfair comparison, report the Metro.

‘I have heard people say that,’ he told Chelsea’s website.

‘But it is not how I look at it.

‘It should not be how anyone does because he [Hazard] was a club legend and he did amazing things here and he is an unbelievable player, but I am coming here as a known player and I am going to show everyone what I can do and play the best I can, for myself and for the club, and that is all I can do.

‘It is a very physical league as people say here. The games have been very intense, every game has presented its own challenge, every team is different.

‘The Bundesliga was also a brilliant league. I can’t say it wasn’t because they are all good teams and every game was tough, but there a few differences but nothing major that I am not used to.

‘London is amazing, it is quite a big city. Dortmund wasn’t the biggest city but a nice city but I am really happy to be here and I am definitely enjoying that side of things.
‘The American culture is a lot different than really anywhere in Europe, the food you can get, the people, everything was a bit different. Going to Germany was a big shock for me but definitely coming here is a lot more similar to how it is in the US. Obviously not the same but a lot more similar.

’Chelsea entertain league leaders Liverpool on Sunday looking to put a halt to the 14-game winning streak Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently on and gain a measure of revenge for August’s Super Cup defeat. He added:

‘We played them in the Super Cup and we got a good taste of that. We played a really good game there and we had a really good chance to win.

‘We are going to go in with another game plan and give it everything and we have players to go out and try to win the game.’

Emerson Palmieri hands Chelsea injury boost, wants to face Liverpool

Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri has hinted he could be fit in time to face Liverpool today.

The Italy international, who has become Chelsea’s first-choice left-back under new coach Frank Lampard, was substituted just eight minutes into Italy’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Finland.

He has missed the last two games against Wolves and Valencia, with Marcos Alonso replacing him in the line-up.

But the former Roma left wing-back has uploaded a picture of himself ahead of the clash against the Reds.

Tweeting a snap of him battling against Reece James, he simply stated: “Preparing for the match!”

Angry Luis Suarez speaks out after Barcelona’s defeat by lowly Granada

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez believes the La Liga champions must a look at their performances following a second defeat of the season for the Catalan giants.

Goals from Ramon Azeez and Alvaro Vadillo confirmed Granada CF’s 2-0 win over Ernesto Valverde’s side, and the Uruguayan was clear in where the blame lies for the defeat.

“Tonight was a worrying defeat, and it hurts a lot.

“There were many things that we did not do well and we must be self critical.

“If we want to improve we have to look at ourselves and where we are going wrong.”

Suarez, who made his first La Liga start since the opening day of the season after recovering from injury, but both he had Antoine Griezmann struggled to create chances -and the former Liverpool man acknowledged the issues in attack, report Football Espana.

“We have to look at how effective we are in front of goal.

“We had a lot of possession, but created very few chances.

“We know there is a responsibility to winning games at FC Barcelona, and we need to be more decisive if we want to win the league.”

Ramon Azeez shines as Granada stun Barcelona (Match Report)

La Liga powerhouse Barcelona were stunned by the league’s new boys Granada pulled off a major shock with a win at the Nuevo los Cármenes.

Diego Martinez’s side have impressed so far in 2019-20, following their return to the Spanish top flight and they stunned Ernesto Valverde with a 2-0 victory at the Nuevo Estadio de Los Carmenes.

Ramon Azeez stunned the visitors with a goal inside the first 60 seconds, heading home at the far post, after Jose Puentas profited from a slip by Junior Firpo – on his first start for the Catalan side.

The visitors never really recovered from that early setback, with Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann unable to trouble an organised home defence.

Valverde brought on Lionel Messi and Ansu Fati at half time, but again they struggled to make any attacking inroads as the hosts looked to preserve their lead.

Any chance of a late FC Barcelona comeback was killed off with 25 minutes to go as substitute Arturo Vidal conceded a penalty for handball.

Arturo Vidal’s handball originally went unspotted, but Granada protested and the incident was referred to VAR where it was confirmed that the Chilean had indeed make hand-to-ball contact in his area.

Vidal’s fellow substitute Alvaro Vadillo scored from the spot to hand the Andalusia side a sumptuous win.

Inter Milan nail AC Milan in derby showdown (Match Report)

Romelu Lukaku and Marcelo Brozovic goals were all Inter Milan needed to claim the three points in the Milan derby, with the woodwork denying Antonio Conte’s side times.

The two teams took the pre-match photograph together as part of an anti-racism initiative.

Ricardo Rodriguez almost gifted the opener on 10 minutes with an awful back-pass, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was alert and decisive as Lautaro Martinez tried to pounce.

Donnarumma was called into action again, getting down quickly for a one-handed save on Romelu Lukaku.

The goalkeeper was exceptional to parry Lautaro Martinez on a Stefano Sensi pull-back and Danilo D’Ambrosio somehow turned the rebound on to the upright from point-blank range.

Krzysztof Piatek had the ball in the net, but only after the whistle had already been blown for a Franck Kessie handball as he charged down the attempted clearance.

Inter had a similar situation with Lautaro Martinez, after Donnarumma’s flying save on a simply sensational D’Ambrosio acrobatic bicycle-kick volley, but both the Italian and Argentine were marginally offside.

Milan were very dangerous on the counter with Suso running coast-to-coast, but rather than pass to Rafael Leao, he went for goal himself and it was charged down by Kwadwo Asamoah.

Leao floated a splendid cross from the left and Piatek turned the free header over the bar.

Straight after the restart, Sensi took a free kick short for Marcelo Brozovic and his shot from the edge of the box took a huge deflection off Rafael Leao’s heel to wrongfoot Donnarumma as it squirmed into the far bottom corner. The offside flag was raised, but after a VAR review, Lautaro Martinez was judged not to be interfering with play and the goal given.

Milan kept possession for long periods, but as seen so many times this season, without creating genuinely dangerous scoring opportunities.

Instead, Barella floated a cross in from the left for Romelu Lukaku’s glancing header into the far top corner, as Inter doubled their lead.

Substitute Matteo Politano nearly made it 3-0 moments later, his strike from outside the area bouncing off the crossbar with Donnarumma stranded.

Theo Hernandez came off the bench and also rattled the frame of the goal, bursting down the left to clip the near upright from a tight angle.

There was almost a third in stoppages, as Antonio Candreva burst away on the counter and his deflected finish bounced off the base of the near post.

AC Milan: G Donnarumma; Conti, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodriguez (Theo Hernandez 71); Kessie, Biglia, Calhanoglu (Paqueta 64); Suso, Piatek, Leao (Rebic 82)

Inter Milan: Handanovic; Godin, De Vrij, Skriniar; D’Ambrosio, Barella (Candreva 81), Brozovic, Sensi (Vecino 71), Asamoah; Lautaro Martinez (Politano 76), R Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku sings Antonio Conte’s praise after after scoring in Inter Milan victory over AC Milan

Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku heaped praise on his manager Antonio Conte, saying: “He helps me every day and gives me motivation.”

Marcelo Brozovic’s deflected shot opened the scoring and Lukaku nodded in the Nicolò Barella cross for his third goal in four Serie A games.

“My rapport with Conte is very strong, as he is a Coach who really helps me. At the age of 26, I want a Coach like this, who helps me every day and gives me motivation.

“I am very happy to be here and to be working with him,” Lukaku told DAZN as cited by Football Italia.

It was a world away from the 1-1 midweek Champions League draw with Slavia Prague, as Inter have a 100 per cent record after four Serie A rounds.

“This match is very important for us, but we have another very difficult game coming up against Lazio. We’re pleased with the three points.

“The game with Slavia Prague was difficult, but we prepared well for tonight and we gave a strong reply. I don’t want to talk about the title now, we take it one game at a time.”
